Jizeu, Tajikistan: Trek & Travel Guide

Jizeu (also spelled Jizev, Jisev, Jiseu and Jeziev) is a remote mountain village in Tajikistan’s Bartang Valley, tucked into the Western Pamirs and accessible only on foot. The Jizeu trek begins at a suspension bridge over the Bartang River and climbs into a side valley dotted with turquoise lakes, small Pamiri villages, and traditional homestays.

For travelers exploring the Pamir Highway, the Jizeu Valley trek is one of the best short treks in Tajikistan. The hike to the first village takes roughly 2–3 hours, making it possible as a day hike, but I strongly recommend spending at least one night in a Jizeu homestay. Staying overnight gives you time to explore farther into the valley and experience a part of Pamiri life that still feels remarkably removed from the road.

Why is Jizeu worth visiting? The appeal is simple: there are no roads into the village. After crossing a footbridge over the Bartang River, you leave the road behind and follow the Jizeudarya River uphill into a valley of lakes, trees, gardens, and scattered Pamiri homes. Several homes operate as homestays, so an overnight stay is also a chance to eat local food and see how people live in this isolated corner of the Pamirs.

Best Time to Visit Jizeu

The best time to trek to Jizeu is generally June through September, when the Pamir mountain roads and trekking routes are most accessible. July and August bring the warmest conditions, while September is my personal favorite for cooler temperatures and autumn color.

Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, however, and access along the Bartang Highway is dependent on road conditions. If you’re traveling early or late in the season, check local conditions in Khorog or Rushan before setting out.

Jizeu Trek

The Jizeu trek is a short but rewarding hike into one of the most isolated inhabited valleys of Tajikistan’s Western Pamirs. The trail begins at the Jizeu Bridge, where a suspension bridge crosses the Bartang River, and follows the Jizeudarya River uphill toward the village.

There is no road into Jizeu. Once you cross the bridge, your feet are officially the transportation system. The trail climbs through a narrow, green valley before opening into the settlements and lakes of Jizeu. The first village can generally be reached in around 2–3 hours, depending on your pace, stops, and trail conditions.

Jizeu is actually a collection of small settlements rather than one compact village. Lower Jizeu and Upper Jizeu sit along the valley near a series of lakes, with homestays scattered among traditional homes, gardens, and trees.

Jizeu Trek Route, Distance & Difficulty

The Jizeu trek is straightforward compared with many longer Pamir treks, but don’t confuse “short” with “flat.” The route climbs steadily from the Bartang River into Jizeu Valley, with the first homes appearing after several kilometers of hiking.

The exact distance depends on where you finish. Most visitors hike to the first village and homestays, while others continue through Upper Jizeu toward the higher lakes. Allow roughly 2–3 hours to reach the first village and plan on at least half a day for the return journey and exploring the valley.

The standard hike is suitable for reasonably fit hikers, but the uphill climb, uneven trail, heat, and remoteness mean you should be prepared to walk without services or vehicle support.

Bartang River to Lower Jizeu

Bartang Highway ➤ Jizeu ➤ Bartang Highway

Jizeu is located in the Jizeu Valley- a side valley off of the Bartang Valley in Tajikistan’s Western Pamir.

To reach Jizeu, you will need to head to the village of Rushan on the Pamir Highway (at KM 553) between Kala-i-Khumb and Khorog. At Rushan, you’ll head east along the Bartang Highway for 23 kilometers until you reach the suspension bridge crossing the Bartang River (the bridge has ‘To Jizeu’ painted on one of the concrete bases).

Once across the bridge, it’s a steep 5 kilometer trek uphill to reach the lower village. Another 1.5 kilometers will take you to the Upper Village of Jizeu.

The total elevation gain from the bridge to the first village is roughly 500 meters (1,640 feet) with the bridge sitting at about 2000 meters (6500 feet). In all the Jizeu trek should take you about 2 hours each way.

Hiking Beyond Jizeu: Upper Jizeu, Tsaxinkul, Ravmed & Basid

Due to proximity I’ve also included the continuation of the Jizeu Trek beyond the first village to Tsaxinkul, as well as the Ravmed Valley and the Basid Valley Treks.

Upper Jizeu & Tsaxinkul

The continuation of the Jizeu trek climbs up to the upper (second) village of Jizeu and continues along the river to two more lakes and eventually onto a lake by the name of Tsaxinkul. This trek is marked in blue on the above map.

Ravmed Valley Trek

In red is the Ravmed Valley trek that starts from the village of Khijez on the Bartang Highway. Following a river valley to the south from Khijez the trail will meander 18 kilometers and eventually bend east to the village of Ravmed. 18 kilometers further the trail continues following the valley to finally reach the meadows under the massive 6083 meter Patkhor Peak.

Basid Valley Trek

In purple is the Basid Trek that follows the Basiddara River to the south along the valley.

Please note that you can connect the Jizeu and Ravmed Treks by making a two day strenuous hike up over the Ravmed Pass. I have personally never done this particular trek connecting the two, so I am unsure of where the 4,200 meter Ravmed Pass is officially located (I have a general idea).

Jizeu to Ravmed

I have not personally completed the Jizeu-to-Ravmed crossing, so I don’t recommend treating my information here as a turn-by-turn route description. The route crosses the high Ravmed Pass and should only be attempted with current local information and, ideally, a guide. Ask locally in Jizeu or Ravmed about current trail conditions before setting out.

How to Get to Jizeu

The easiest way to get to Jizeu is by private vehicle from Rushan or Khorog. Your driver should take you along the Bartang Highway to the Jizeu Bridge, where the road ends for travelers heading into the valley. From the bridge, you cross the Bartang River and hike into Jizeu.

From Khorog to Jizeu

From Khorog, take a shared taxi from the New Bazaar or a private car toward Rushan, then continue east along the Bartang Highway to the Jizeu Bridge, about 23 km beyond Rushan. The bridge is the trailhead, so make sure your driver knows you are going to Jizeu rather than just Rushan. I recommend arranging a private car and agreeing on a return pickup time in advance.

From Rushan to Jizeu

Rushan is the closest town to the Jizeu trailhead. From town, follow the Bartang Highway east for about 23 km to the Jizeu Bridge, where the road ends for Jizeu trekkers. You can try to find a shared taxi, but a private car is more reliable, especially if you’re staying overnight and need transportation back to Rushan.

From Dushanbe to Jizeu

From Dushanbe, travel east toward Rushan via the Pamir Highway, then continue along the Bartang Highway to the Jizeu Bridge. Shared taxis to Rushan and the Pamir Highway depart from Dushanbe’s Badakhshanskaya Avtostansiya. From Khorog, shared taxis and marshrutkas to Rushan depart from the New Bazaar. Once to Rushan, you can find shared taxis and marshrutkas departing up the Bartang Valley, but it’s easiest to arrange a car to drop you off and pick you up as traffic can be thin along the Bartang Highway.

Getting Back From Jizeu

It’s best to arrange your return transportation before starting the trek. There is no reliable public transportation schedule at the Jizeu trailhead, and traffic along the Bartang Highway is limited. Have your driver meet you at the Jizeu Bridge at an agreed time, or ask your homestay host to help arrange a ride back to Rushan or Khorog.

Where to Stay in Jizeu: Homestays & Camping

7 of the 14 homes scattered around Jizeu act as homestays. I personally recommend staying at Homestay Lola from my own experience.

Popular options for those that want to stay with an English speaker is Gulsha Guesthouse (the first homestay you’ll reach on arrival at the lower village), and the homestay located about 10 minutes walk beyond the upper village.

Expect to pay 250 TJS per night per person, including dinner and breakfast. It is easy enough to camp along any of these treks, though make sure to set up camp a little ways away from homes and crops if camping near a village.

Camping in Jizeu

Camping is possible in Jizeu and along the wider valley, but avoid setting up immediately beside homes, cultivated fields, or livestock areas. Ask a local family if you’re unsure where you can camp. Bring a proper tent, sleeping bag, stove, and water-treatment method, as you should not expect shops or camping infrastructure in the valley.

Jizeu Tours & Local Guides

You don’t need a guide for the standard Jizeu trek if you’re comfortable navigating independently. The main route follows the valley and is straightforward for experienced hikers. A local guide becomes much more useful if you plan to continue beyond Jizeu toward Ravmed, Basid, Tsaxinkul, or higher mountain routes. Do You Need a GBAO Permit for Jizeu?

Jizeu is in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), so travelers should have a GBAO permit before traveling into the region.

Is There Electricity or Phone Service in Jizeu?

Jizeu is remote and you should not expect mobile service or internet access. Some homes have electricity through small-scale systems, solar power, or generators, but don’t treat the village like a conventional tourist destination. Download maps, carry a solar panel or extrenal battery, and save important phone numbers before leaving Khorog or Rushan.

Are There Shops in Jizeu?

Don’t count on shops or regular supplies in Jizeu. Bring everything you need for the trek, particularly snacks, medication, water-treatment supplies, and camping fuel if you’re camping. Homestays provide food, so if planning to spend the night, meals are possible.

What Language Is Spoken in Jizeu?

The people of Jizeu are Pamiri and the local dialect spoken is Bartangi. Tajik and Russian are also spoken. English is limited, although some homestay hosts have enough English to communicate with foreign travelers.

Is Jizeu Safe?

Yes, Jizeu is generally a safe destination for travelers, but the main risks are remoteness, mountain terrain, road conditions, and natural hazards rather than crime. Once you cross the Bartang River, there is no road access into the village and limited outside assistance.

There is wildlife that lives in the mountains of the Western Pamir. There are wolves, bears, sheep, and more but it’s fairly unlikely you’ll run into any of them, however, take precautions.

The biggest concern out here would be that of a natural disaster. Tajikistan is prone to earthquakes so landslides are not unheard of.

The biggest fear in this area is the breach of the Usoi Dam that has created the massive Lake Sarez. If the dam were to breach, it would send a wall of water hurtling down the Bartang Valley. Jizeu residents’ only defense, in this case, is to head for higher ground.
