If you’re planning to enter or leave Tajikistan overland, choosing the right border crossing matters. Some crossings are open to foreign travelers, some are restricted to citizens of the neighboring countries, and others may close with little notice.

I’ve crossed several of Tajikistan’s borders myself and have spent more than a decade traveling in the country. This guide covers the Tajikistan border crossings you can actually use as a foreign traveler, plus crossings that are currently closed or restricted.

Below you’ll find Tajikistan’s border crossings with Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, China, and Afghanistan, including the best crossings for popular overland routes such as Osh to the Pamir Highway, Samarkand to Panjakent, Dushanbe to Uzbekistan, and Murghab to Kashgar.

Important: Border rules and opening status can change with little to no notice. Always confirm the current status locally before setting out, particularly for crossings in the Pamirs and along the Afghanistan border.

Border status changes frequently, especially on the Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan borders. Check locally before traveling.

Can Foreigners Cross Into Tajikistan Overland?

Yes. Foreign travelers can enter Tajikistan by land through several international border crossings, including crossings with Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, China, and Afghanistan.

However, not every official border crossing is available to foreign travelers. Some are bilateral crossings intended primarily for citizens of the two neighboring countries, while others may be temporarily closed because of security conditions, political developments, weather, or local restrictions.

For travelers, the most useful crossings are generally:

Kyzyl-Art–Bordobo between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan
Panjakent–Samarkand between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan
Oybek-Buston between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in the Fergana Valley
Tursunzoda–Denau between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan
Qolma Pass/Kalasu between Tajikistan and China
Panji Poyon–Shir Khan Bandar between Tajikistan and Afghanistan

Don’t assume that a crossing appearing on an official list is automatically usable by tourists. Current border status is the important part.

Tajikistan Border Crossings

Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan Border Crossings

Tajikistan’s border with Kyrgyzstan has more recently been one of the more complicated borders in Central Asia, particularly around Batken and the Fergana Valley due to the Vorukh conflict. Relations improved significantly following the 2025 border agreement, and several crossings have reopened or changed status.

For travelers, Kyzyl-Art–Bordobo remains the key crossing for the Pamir Highway. Other crossings are more relevant to travelers moving between northern Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan’s Batken region.

Open to Foreigners

Kyzyl-Art–Bordobo Border Crossing

Kyzyl Art Pass, Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan Border Crossing, Adventures of Nicole — A Rainbow Mountain in the no-man’s land between Kyzyl Art Pass and Bordöbö

Kyzyl-Art–Bordobo is the main international border crossing between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan for travelers following the Pamir Highway. It connects Karakul and Murghab in Tajikistan with Sary Tash and Osh in Kyrgyzstan via the M41.

The crossing sits high in the Pamirs at Kyzyl-Art Pass and is one of the most spectacular border crossings in Central Asia. From the Tajik side, the road runs through the stark landscapes of the Pamir Plateau before descending toward Karakul and Murghab.

As of July 2025, foreign travelers no longer need the previously required permission specifically for the Kyzyl-Art border crossing.

If entering Tajikistan at Kyzyl Art, make sure you have a GBAO permit.

Isfara-Batken Border Crossing

Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston Border Crossing, Batken-Isfara Border Crossing, Fergana Valley, Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan Border Crossing, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Adventures of Nicole — Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston Border Crossing

Isfara-Batken (technically Guliston–Kyzyl-Bel), is useful for travelers moving between northern Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan’s Batken region. It is particularly relevant if you’re traveling through the Fergana Valley rather than heading toward the Pamir Highway.

The border crossing is straightforward and usually pretty quiet. Shared transport can be found from Batken to Kyzyl-Bel, the village nearest the border on the Kyrgyz Side. On the Tajik side shared taxis and marshrutka make the route between the border and Isfara. From Isfara it’s possible to conenct to ther cities across the Tajik Fergana Valley.

Ovchi Kalacha-Kulundu

Ovchi Kalacha–Kulundu is another crossing in the Fergana Valley connecting northern Tajikistan with Kyrgyzstan.

Bilateral Crossings

Tojvaron–Karamyk Border Crossing

Tojvaron–Karamyk connects Jirgatol in the Lakhsh District in Tajikistan with Chon-Alay District in Kyrgyzstan. Currently it is open only to citizens of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, so tourists and foreigners will not be allowed to cross here.

Should it open to foreign travelers, Tojvaron–Karamyk could be very useful for travelers interested in crossing between the Rasht Valley.

Tajikistan-Uzbekistan Border Crossings

The Tajikistan-Uzbekistan border is the easiest of Tajikistan’s four international borders for most travelers. The two countries have several international crossings, making it straightforward to combine a trip through Tajikistan with Samarkand, Tashkent, Termez, or the Uzbek Fergana Valley.

The reopening of the Panjakent-Samarkand crossing after years of strained relations dramatically improved overland travel between the two countries.

Panjakent-Samarkand Border Crossing

Sarazm Border Crossing, Tajikistan Uzbekistan Border Crossing, Adventures of Nicole — Exiting Tajikistan into Uzbekistan at the Sarezm Border Crossing

The Panjakent-Samarkand Border Crossing is the most useful Tajikistan-Uzbekistan border crossing for travelers visiting the Fann Mountains and Samarkand.

On the Tajik side, the crossing is at Sarazm, near the ancient city of Sarazm and Panjakent. On the Uzbek side, it connects to Jartepa, outside Samarkand.

This is the crossing I recommend for travelers combining Tajikistan’s Fann Mountains with Uzbekistan’s Silk Road cities. I have crossed here myself multiple times and have generally found the process straightforward, although border procedures can change.

Buston-Oybek Border Crossing

Buston–Oybek Border Crossing is the main overland option for travelers traveling between Khujand and Tashkent.

This is one of the busiest border crossings in Tajikistan. The process is pretty straightforward in both directions. Border conditions and processing times vary, so allow plenty of time rather than planning a tight connection on either side.

Shared transport can be found between Khujand’s Abreshim Bus Station and the border. From Tashkent, shared taxis depart Kuyluk Bazaar to the border.

Konibodom-Beshariq Border Crossing

Konibodom–Beshariq connects the Tajik Fergana with Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley, making it useful for travelers heading toward Kokand and other Fergana Valley cities.

Tursunzade-Denau Border Crossing

Denau-Dushanbe, Uzbek-Tajik Border Crossing, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Adventures of Nicole

Tursunzade–Denau Border Crossing is a useful Uzbekistan-Tajikistan border crossing for travelers traveling between Dushanbe and southeastern Uzbekistan.

It is particularly useful if you’re heading toward Denau, Termez, or other destinations in southern Uzbekistan rather than traveling north toward Samarkand or Tashkent.

Shahrtuz-Termez Border Crossing

The Shahrtuz–Termez Border Crossing connects southwestern Tajikistan’s Khatlon Region city of Shahrtuz with Termez, Uzbekistan, making it a useful option for travelers exploring southern Uzbekistan.

Shared taxis can be found at the Shahrtuz Bazaar to the border.

Dusti-Pap Border Crossing

Dusti–Pap provides another route between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley and can be useful for travelers traveling between Khujand and Namangan.

Tajikistan-China Border Crossing

Despite the long border between the two, Tajikistan and China only have one border crossing at Qolma Pass.

Qolma Pass-Kalasu Border Crossing

Kalasu Port, Qolma Pass, Tajikistan-China Border, Adventures of Nicole — Kalasu Port on the Chinese side of Qolma Pass

The Qolma Pass–Kalasu Border Crossing is Tajikistan’s only international land border crossing with China and connects Murghab in Tajikistan’s GBAO with Tashkurgan in Xinjiang, China. It is the key overland route for travelers traveling between the Pamir Highway and Kashgar.

I’ve crossed the Qolma Pass border in both directions, and this is not a normal walk-across-the-border situation. Travelers cannot simply drive their own vehicle or walk across the crossing. Transport arrangements are an important part of planning this route.

Historically, independent travelers have relied on truck transport to cross the pass, but arrangements and restrictions can change. Confirm the current procedure in Murghab, Kashgar, or Tashkurgan before setting out.

If entering Tajikistan at Qolma Pass, make sure you have a GBAO permit.

Tajikistan-Afghanistan Border Crossings

The Tajikistan-Afghanistan border follows much of the Panj River and is considerably more complicated for travelers than Tajikistan’s borders with Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan.

Although Tajikistan has several official crossings with Afghanistan, the only one currently open is Panji Poyon-Shir Khan Bandar. Border status, security conditions, and permission to cross can change with little to no notice, so do enquire locally before setting out to the border.

Open to Foreigners

Panji Poyan-Sher Khan Bandar Border Crossing

The Panji Poyan–Sher Khan Bandar Border Crossing is the principal road crossing between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and is located southwest of Dushanbe. The crossing connects Tajikistan with Kunduz Province in Afghanistan.

Because security conditions in northern Afghanistan can change quickly, foreign travelers should confirm whether the crossing is currently operating for their nationality and purpose of travel before attempting to cross.

Afghanistan visa on arrival is possible here at the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border for some nationalities.

Currently Closed

Ishkashim-Sultan Eshkashim Border Crossing

Panj River, Ishkashim Border, Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border, Adventures of Nicole — On the Panj River border bridge at Ishkashim

The Ishkashim–Sultan Eshkashim Border Crossing is the historic crossing between Tajikistan’s Wakhan Valley and Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor.

The crossing is currently closed with no signs of re-opening. Do not plan an overland crossing here without confirming that the border has reopened.

Khorog-Shegnan Border Crossing

Khorog–Shegnan, also known as the Tem crossing, connects Khorog with Afghanistan across the Panj River.

The crossing is not open to foreign tourists. It currently is only used for local and commercial purposes, for the Tem Afghan Bazaar.

Kokul-Darkod Border Crossing

Kokul–Darkod is a more remote Tajikistan-Afghanistan crossing in the western part of the border. The crossing involves crossing the Panj River and is not currently open.

Ruzvai-Nusai Border Crossing

Ruzvai–Nusai is located near Qala i Khumb and connects Tajikistan’s Darvoz area with Afghanistan across the Panj River. At present, the border crossing is closed.

Kupruki Vanj-Jomarji Bolo Border Crossing

Kupruki Vanj–Jomarji Bolo is another crossing over the Panj River near the Vanj Valley. It is currently closed.

Langar Border Crossing

Langar is a remote crossing between the Tajik and Afghan Wakhan Corridor. There are buildings there, and on the Tajik side were renovated in 2021. The Langar border crossing has never opened.

Which Tajikistan Border Crossing Should You Use?

Traveling from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan

Use Kyzyl-Art–Bordobo if you’re traveling from Osh or Sary-Tash toward Murghab and the Pamir Highway.

Traveling from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan

Use:

Panjakent–Samarkand for Samarkand and the Fann Mountains
Oybek/Buston for Tashkent and Khujand
Tursunzade–Denau for Dushanbe and southeastern Uzbekistan
Shahrtuz–Termez for southern Tajikistan and Termez
Konibodom–Beshariq for the Uzbek Fergana Valley

Traveling from Tajikistan to China

Use Qolma Pass–Kalasu for the overland route between Murghab and Tashkurgan/Kashgar.

Traveling from Tajikistan to Afghanistan

As Panji Poyon-Shir Khan Bandar is the only crossing currently open between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, it is your only option. Of course, confirm locally the crossing is operating for foreign travelers and check current security conditions before traveling.

What Do You Need to Cross a Tajikistan Border?

Requirements depend on your nationality and the specific crossing, but foreign travelers should generally have:

A valid passport
A Tajikistan visa or visa-free eligibility, if entering Tajikistan
Any required permits for restricted regions
Your onward travel documents where applicable
Copies of important documents
Cash in small denominations

If you’re traveling through the Pamir region, check whether your itinerary requires a GBAO permit or other regional permission before leaving for the border.

Can You Walk Across Tajikistan’s Border Crossings?

Sometimes, but it depends entirely on the border crossing.

Some Tajikistan border crossings allow travelers to pass on foot, while others require you to use designated transport or transfer between vehicles on either side.

Do not assume that because a road appears to cross the border on Google Maps you can simply walk across it. Remote crossings can have very different procedures, and some are restricted to specific categories of travelers.

This is particularly important for Qolma Pass, where independent travelers should confirm the current transport procedure before arriving.

What Time Do Tajikistan Border Crossings Open?

Border crossing hours vary by location and can change seasonally. Many crossings operate primarily during daylight hours, while some major international crossings, such as Oybek-Buston, Tursunzoda-Dushanbe, and Kyzyl-Art, may be open 24 hours.

Do not rely on an old published opening time when planning a border crossing. Check locally in the days immediately before you travel.

Overlanding Via Tajikistan Border Crossings

Tajikistan has some of the most scenic overland border crossings in Central Asia, from the high-altitude Kyzyl-Art Pass on the Pamir Highway to the Qolma Pass crossing between two of the region’s most mountainous areas.

The important thing to remember is that a border crossing appearing on a map does not necessarily mean it is available to foreign travelers. Rules, opening hours, permits, and security conditions can change.

If you’re planning an overland trip through Tajikistan, check the status of your intended crossing shortly before traveling and build some flexibility into your itinerary. Central Asian border crossings have a habit of reminding you who’s actually in charge.
