Panjakent-Samarkand Border Crossing

Panjakent to Samarkand Border Crossing (Updated December 2025)

The Panjakent-Samarkand land border (officially Sarazm/Jartepa) remains one of the most convenient crossings between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, ideal for linking the Fann Mountains with Samarkand’s Silk Road wonders. Reopened in 2018, it’s open 24/7 and pedestrian-friendly.

Important Warning: Corruption Reports

In summer 2024, significant bribe demands (up to $100/person) were reported, mainly on the Tajik side. Experiences vary—some cross smoothly, others face issues. Arrive prepared (cash in small bills), be polite but firm, and consider alternatives like Oybek if concerned.

Visas (End of 2025)

  • Tajikistan: Visa-free (30 days) for ~80 countries; e-visa available for most others.
  • Uzbekistan: Visa-free (30 days) for ~90 countries; e-visa for others. US citizens gain 30-day visa-free from Jan 1, 2026.
