Socotra Island Travel Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Updated January 2026

After several years of being nearly cut off from the outside world, Socotra is open to tourism. This guide covers everything you need to visit the island known as ‘the most alien-looking place on Earth’.

Socotra lies in the Arabian Sea, roughly halfway between Yemen and Somalia. About 80 million years ago, during the Miocene Epoch, the island separated from the Arabian Peninsula, evolving in isolation. This created one of the highest concentrations of endemic flora and fauna on Earth, comparable to the Galapagos, Hawaii, New Caledonia, and New Zealand.

Socotra Travel Quick Info

Currency — Yemeni Rial

Language — Socotri (Semitic language). Arabic widely spoken. Guides available in English, Russian, French, and German.

Population — Approximately 70,000.

When To Go — October through mid-May offers lower storm risk. February to May brings driest, clearest weather; October to January has higher rain chance but remains low. Avoid mid-May through September due to storms and winds (though ideal for kite surfing).

What To Wear — Choose conservative clothing in towns and villages. Women cover body, shoulders, and legs (headscarf welcomed but not required); men avoid shorts above the knee. Hiking, beaches, camping, and nature exploration allow more relaxed attire.

Temperatures stay hot and humid, but Haggier Mountains nights cool enough for a light jacket or fleece.

What not to wear — Skimpy clothing outside beach/swimming areas. Socotra remains conservative; respect locals by dressing modestly.

Getting A Yemeni Visa

Tourists cannot obtain a Yemeni visa independently at embassies or on arrival. Book through a Socotra tour agency, which secures approval and provides a paper copy.

Present this approval to board flights (Air Arabia from Abu Dhabi or Yemenia from Cairo/Aden). Use it for immigration at Socotra Airport.

Arrival may offer passport stamp or separate sheet (due to policies for certain nationalities).

Visa costs around $150-170 USD, handled by the agency.

How To Travel To Socotra

Primary access comes via direct Air Arabia charter flights from Abu Dhabi (2-3 times weekly, Tuesdays, Fridays, sometimes Sundays; round-trip ~$930-980 USD). Book through tour operators; seats limited—reserve 5-8 months ahead.

Alternative: Yemenia weekly from Cairo via Aden/Mukalla (~$1,195 USD round-trip), requiring extra transit permission.

Sporadic ships from mainland Yemen or Salalah (Oman) exist but remain unreliable and not recommended for tourists.

Money

USD serves as the most accepted foreign currency and easiest to exchange. Bring enough cash for the trip.

Convert small USD amounts to Yemeni Rial in Hadiboh for souvenirs and minor purchases. Rate fluctuates (around 1,200 YER to $1 USD in late 2024).

Getting Around

Tours (required for visa) include 4WD transport, guides, and drivers. Explore mainly by 4WD, with dhow boats for Shua’ab Beach and optional hikes or camel treks.

No car rentals or formal public transport exist beyond occasional buses/minibuses between Hadiboh and coastal communities.

Accommodations

Most nights involve camping in tents (included in tours). Two basic hotels in Hadiboh: Summerlands Hotel and Socotra Eco Lodge.
