Beyond Socotra: Exploring the Outer Islands of the Archipelago (January 2026 Update)
Updated January 2026 – The Socotra Archipelago comprises four main islands and two rocky islets, far beyond the surreal landscapes of main Socotra Island. Reaching the remote outer islands—Abd al Kuri, Samha, and Darsa—remains an epic adventure involving multi-day boat charters from Qalansiya. These trips are rugged, involving tent camping and basic conditions, but reward with pristine beaches, unique endemics, and total isolation.
Important Note: As of early 2026, foreigners are still restricted from visiting Abd al Kuri (since May 2024). Tours typically now focus on Samha and Darsa, with possible distant views of Abd al Kuri. Confirm with operators for latest permissions.
The Outer Islands
Abd al Kuri (Restricted Access)
Largest outer island (~133 km²), arid with jagged mountains (Jebel Saleh, 509m). Home to small fishing communities and unique endemics like the massive Euphorbia abdalkuri cactus.
Highlights include bioluminescent beaches, villages like Khasat Saleh, and sweeping bays.
Samha (~41 km²)
Inhabited (small village in a narrow canyon), dominated by a dramatic limestone plateau (780m). Trek to highlands for endemics like Begonia samhaensis. Important bird area with rugged cliffs.
Darsa (~6 km²)
Uninhabited “brother” to Samha, with stunning white-sand beaches, sea caves, and bird colonies (plus notorious rats!). One of the world’s most pristine, untouched spots.
The Islets
- Kal Firun: Twin pyramidal stacks, bird sanctuary (distant views only).
- Sabuniya: Barren rock near Qalansiya, teeming with seabirds.
How to Visit in 2026
Trips require chartered fishing boats (with crew, permits, anti-piracy guards). Organized via reputable Socotra operators (e.g., Expedition Socotrana, Inertia Network, Safar Expeditions).
- Duration: 4-7 days (plus main Socotra time).
- Cost: Boat charter ~$4,500–$10,000+ USD (split among group; total per person $1,000–$2,500+ depending on size).
- Season: October–May (avoid monsoon June–September).
- Access: Start/end in Qalansiya; rough seas common—expect 6–12 hour journeys.
These expeditions are for experienced adventurers—primitive camping, no facilities. Socotra tourism booms in 2026 with more Abu Dhabi flights, but outer islands remain ultra-exclusive. Contact operators early; spots fill fast!
