Climbing Shah Foladi, Afghanistan
Updated January 2026 (originally published August 2021)
Shah Foladi (~5,048–5,192 m) is Central Afghanistan’s highest peak in the Koh e Baba Mountains (Bamyan/Wardak border). This stunning alpine climb features dramatic valleys, snow walls, jagged ridges, and sweeping views—once a highlight for adventurous trekkers in Bamyan.
Important Safety Update (January 2026)
Major governments (US, UK, Australia, Canada) advise against all travel to Afghanistan due to terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary detention, and volatile security. Bamyan remains relatively stable compared to other provinces, with some guided tours operating (including to Band-e-Amir and Buddha sites). However, risks persist—ISIS-K claimed a deadly attack on tourists in Bamyan (2024). Independent trekking like Shah Foladi is not recommended without expert local guidance and security assessment. Check latest advisories before any plans.
