How to Register Your IMEI Numbers in Kazakhstan

Starting in March 2025, if you are visiting Kazakhstan and buy a local Kazakhstan SIM card, you will need to register your phone’s IMEI. Foreign visitors using their regular home SIM card in roaming or who have bought a foreign eSIM such as the Holafly eSIM, do not need to register their device.

The good news is that the process is fairly straightforward and free.

1. Find your IMEI number

Your IMEI is the unique identification number assigned to your phone. The easiest way to find it is to open your phone’s dialer and enter:

Your IMEI will appear on the screen. If you have a dual-SIM phone, you may see two IMEI numbers. Both need to be registered when using both SIM connections.

2. Put your Kazakhstan SIM card in your phone

The SIM card needs to be registered to you before you register the device. Once you’ve inserted your local SIM, the operator can link your phone’s IMEI to your Kazakhstan phone number and your identification details.

3. Register the device

For foreign visitors using a local Kazakhstan SIM, Beeline currently provides the option to register by dialing *693# and entering your foreign passport number. You can also visit a Beeline customer service office and have staff help with the registration.

If you’re using another operator, such as Kcell, the exact procedure can differ. Kcell states that you must enter your passport number in an SMS (passport number only, without spaces or other characters) or dial the USSD command *660*1*passportnumber# and press the call button.
For example: *660*1*B0123456#, where B0123456 is your passport number. The passport number consists of 8 characters.

Tip: If you’re buying your SIM from an official operator store, I’d simply ask the staff to register your phone while you’re there. It saves you from trying to decipher a USSD menu in Russian or Kazakh, which is not exactly how I’d choose to spend my first hour in Kazakhstan if you don’r speak or read either lagnauge.

4. Wait for confirmation

Once the registration is completed, you should receive confirmation from the operator. If your phone has two IMEI numbers, make sure both have been registered if you intend to use both SIM slots.

Do I Need to Register my IMEI with an eSIM?

This is where things get a little more nuanced. The important distinction is whether you are using a Kazakhstan-issued mobile number or roaming on a foreign operator. A foreign visitor using their home SIM in international roaming does not need IMEI registration. If you’re using a Kazakhstan operator’s SIM or eSIM, however, the device is subject to Kazakhstan’s registration requirements.

For a typical international travel eSIM, check the provider’s instructions before your trip rather than assuming that every eSIM is treated the same way.

My advice: If you’re only visiting Kazakhstan for a week or two, an international travel eSIM is considerably less hassle. If you’re staying longer and want a local Kazakhstan number, buy your local SIM from an official operator store and have them handle the registration for you.
