Beeline also offers eSIM plans, so you do not necessarily need a physical SIM if your phone supports eSIM.

MegaCom

MegaCom, now branded as MEGA, is another major Kyrgyzstan mobile operator and a popular choice for travelers buying a local SIM card.

It offers mobile data, physical SIM cards and eSIM services, with coverage extending well beyond Bishkek and the country’s major cities.

When I was heading deeper into the mountains, including places such as Tulparkul and Jeti Oguz, this was the network locals recommended to me most often. Coverage can vary significantly in remote mountain valleys, though, so I would not choose a SIM solely on the assumption that one operator works everywhere.

O! Kyrgyzstan

O! is one of the main mobile operators in Kyrgyzstan and is particularly worth considering if you want a local SIM or eSIM.

O! has been expanding its 4G LTE network throughout Kyrgyzstan, including improvements in Issyk Kul and more than 200 towns and villages.

For travelers, the biggest advantage is that O! now offers eSIM registration to foreign visitors using a passport from any country. You can complete the eSIM registration online without visiting an O! store, although the mobile service activates once you are inside Kyrgyzstan.

O! also offers physical SIM cards through its stores, so it is a good option whether you want a traditional Kyrgyzstan SIM card or a local eSIM.

Where to Buy a Kyrgyz SIM Card

You can purchase SIM cards at Manas International Airport, though options can be limited depending on arrival time.

I have found it easier to stop by a shop in Bishkek after flying into the country or in Sary Mogul after crossing the Kyzyl Art Border from Tajikistan, where staff will help set everything up quickly. Still, it does mean adding an extra errand at the start of your trip.

If you are flying into Bishkek or Osh and opting to buy a local SIM card once in Kyrgyzstan, I recommend purchasing one once you are in the city and not from one of the kiosks in the airport, as the prices are about 50% less.

Do You Need a Passport to Buy a SIM Card in Kyrgyzstan?

Yes. SIM cards in Kyrgyzstan need to be registered, so you should bring your passport when purchasing a local SIM.

Beeline currently requires registration of new SIM cards and provides a process for registering using passport information and facial verification.

O! also requires passport-based identification for new subscribers, including foreign visitors. Foreign nationals can use their passports to register for an O! eSIM.

There is also a separate phone-registration requirement in Kyrgyzstan. O! notes that mobile phones are subject to registration through the country’s State Identification System, so travelers staying longer should check the current requirements for their device.

Mobile Coverage in Kyrgyzstan

Mobile coverage in Kyrgyzstan is generally good in Bishkek, Osh, Karakol, and other towns, but you should not expect continuous service once you head into the mountains.

Kyrgyzstan’s terrain is the big wildcard. You can have a strong signal in one village and absolutely nothing a short drive later. Popular trekking and camping destinations can have little or no mobile coverage, so download offline maps and anything else you may need before leaving a town with reliable internet.

This is particularly important if you are heading to places such as Song Kul, the Alay Valley, Tash Rabat or remote trekking areas. A SIM card cannot create a signal where there is no mobile network.

Physical SIM vs eSIM: Which Should You Choose for Kyrgyzstan?

If you are traveling longer-term or want a local number, picking up a SIM from Beeline or MegaCom is a solid and budget-friendly option.

If you want to land and go without thinking about it, Holafly is easily the most convenient choice.

Either way, having connectivity and being able to check maps and coordinates even intermittently made a huge difference. Out there, that kind of reliability feels like a safety net.
