The Isfara-Batken border crossing is one of the most useful land borders for traveling between northern Tajikistan and southern Kyrgyzstan. Officially known as the Guliston-Kyzyl-Bel border crossing, it connects Guliston on the Tajik side, near Isfara, with Kyzyl-Bel in Kyrgyzstan’s Batken Region.

For travelers, the geography is refreshingly simple even if the border history is anything but. You can travel from Isfara to Batken, cross the international border, and then continue onward toward Osh.

I crossed this part of the Fergana Valley using local transport, and the journey is fairly straightforward. You can do this journey by marshrutkas, although you will need to change vehicles around in Batken and at the border.

Is the Isfara-Batken Border Crossing Open?

Yes. The Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston border crossing reopened in March 2025, when Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan resumed operations at several crossings following the signing of their bilateral border agreement.

That was a significant change from the previous few years, when the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan land border was closed following the 2021 Vorukh conflict.

Always enquire locally before heading to the border, as border crossings can close with little notice.

Where Is the Isfara-Batken Border Crossing?

On the Tajik side, the crossing is at Guliston, just outside Isfara.

On the Kyrgyz side, it is at Kyzyl-Bel, a village roughly 9 kilometers from Batken.

The border lies on the main road connecting Isfara and Batken, making it the obvious crossing if you are traveling between the two cities.

This is also why you will sometimes see it described online as the Isfara-Osh border crossing. Technically, that is not the name of the border crossing. Osh is simply the next major destination for many travelers continuing through Kyrgyzstan.

How to Cross From Batken to Isfara

If you’re traveling from Batken to Isfara, the Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston border crossing is the most straightforward route between the two cities. The journey is relatively simple using local marshrutkas, although you’ll need to change vehicles around the border.

The route is:

Batken → Kyzyl-Bel → Guliston border → Isfara

Take a Marshrutka From Batken to Kyzyl-Bel

From Batken, head toward the area around Batken Bazaar and look for local transport heading toward Kyzyl-Bel, the village on the Kyrgyz side of the border.

Marshrutkas and shared taxis serve the area. From Batken Bazaar, I walked to this location: 40.063098, 70.818298, and found the Kyzyl-Bel marshrutka. You may find shared taxis to the border in this vicitinity too. If you don’t see any vehicles, ask around for a vehicle going to Kyzyl-Bel or the border.

Kyzyl-Bel is only about 500 meters from the border, so you can walk the final stretch if your vehicle doesn’t go all the way to the checkpoint. In my case, the marshrutka’s final stop was here: 40.102996, 70.736733, and the driver pointed out a path from which I could walk over to the border crossing.

Walk From Kyzyl-Bel to the Border

If you’re dropped in Kyzyl-Bel village as I was, continue toward the Kyzyl-Bel border checkpoint. The border facilities are roughly 500 meters from the village.

This step may not apply if you take the shared taxi, as they usually do go to the border crossing post.

At the Kyrgyz side, complete the exit formalities before continuing through the international crossing into Tajikistan.

On the Tajik side, you’ll enter through Guliston, the border crossing serving the Isfara area.

The two sides are commonly referred to together as the Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston border crossing, although you’ll also see the crossing described as the Isfara-Batken border crossing.

Allow plenty of time for immigration and security procedures, particularly if you’re traveling on a foreign passport. Border procedures and eligibility can change, so check the current situation before setting out.

Take a Marshrutka or Shared Taxi From Guliston to Isfara

Once you’ve crossed into Tajikistan, a local marshrutka will likely be waiting, and shared taxis will be sat there too to connect the border area with Isfara.

The marshrutka is 3 TJS per person, whereas the taxis are 40 TJS for the entire car or 10 TJS per person.

Isfara is only a short distance from Guliston, making this an easy final leg of the journey.

From Isfara, you can continue by shared taxi or marshrutka toward other destinations in northern Tajikistan, including Khujand and the wider Tajik Fergana Valley.

How to Cross From Isfara to Batken

Traveling from Isfara to Batken is essentially the same journey in reverse.

From Isfara, take a marshrutka from the main road in front of the Isfara Bazaar toward the Guliston border. The fare is 3 TJS.

Cross the Tajik border at Guliston, then enter Kyrgyzstan through Kyzyl-Bel. After immigration, walk approximately 500 meters into Kyzyl-Bel village, where you can look for a marshrutka toward Batken, or look for taxis waiting at the border.

Plan to pay 30 KGS per seat for the Kyzyl-Bel to Batken marshrutka.

Getting from Osh to Batken

If you’re coming from Osh to Batken or continuing to Osh from Batken, there is a marshrutka that plies the route.

From Osh to Batken, take a Yandex to the Osh New Central Bus Station. At the bus station, there are marshrutkas going to Batken, look for #537.

From Batken, go to the station at Batken Bazaar and look for marshrutka #537 to Osh. It arrives at the New Central Bus Station.

The price is 500 KGS per seat.

The Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston border crossing should operate 24 hours, but its always good to ask around before heading to the border.

The border is considerably more accessible than it was during the period of Kyrgyz-Tajik border closures, but this is still a region where you should pay attention to local conditions.

Tips for Crossing the Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston Border

A few things made the journey easier:

Carry cash. Local marshrutkas operate on cash, and you’ll need both Tajik somoni and Kyrgyz som for the different sections of the journey.

Start early. Even when the border is operating normally, crossing times and transport connections are unpredictable.

Don’t plan a tight connection. Give yourself plenty of time if you’re trying to reach Osh or another city the same day.

Download offline maps. Cell service can be inconsistent around the border, and having Kyzyl-Bel and Batken marked on your phone is useful.

Ask locally. Transport schedules in the Fergana Valley are often less about published timetables and more about asking the person standing next to you where the marshrutka goes.

Check the border immediately before traveling. These border zones have seen upheaval in recent years, so always double-check as they can close with little notice.

Is the Isfara-Batken Border Crossing Worth Using?

If you’re traveling through the Kyrgyz and Tajik Fergana Valley, the Isfara-Batken border crossing is convenient.

The Kyzyl-Bel-Guliston crossing gives you a practical overland connection between Isfara and Batken and makes it possible to continue onward toward Osh without a massive detour. More importantly, it opens up a part of Central Asia that most travelers rush through without really seeing.

The geography here is complicated, the politics have been complicated, and even figuring out which marshrutka goes where can feel like a logistical puzzle.
