Kyzyl Art Border Crossing

Crossing Kyzyl Art Pass: Tajikistan ↔ Kyrgyzstan (January 2026 Update)

The Kyzyl Art (Tajikistan) – Bor-Döbö (Kyrgyzstan) crossing at 4,280m is the iconic high-altitude gateway on the Pamir Highway (M41). As of July 2025, special permissions are no longer required—the border is fully open to all international travelers in both directions, with no pre-approval needed. This followed border demarcation agreements, and the status remains open into 2026.

Procedures are straightforward and efficient, with stunning no-man’s-land scenery (colorful striped mountains, glaciers).

Visas & Permits

  • Tajikistan: Most nationalities get e-visa online (up to 60 days, ~$50). Include GBAO permit (~$20) on application for Pamirs access—mandatory entering from Kyrgyzstan.
  • Kyrgyzstan: Visa-free for 60-90 days (most nationalities); others get e-visa or VOA.

From Tajikistan → Kyrgyzstan (Murghab → Sary Tash/Osh)

Shared taxis depart Murghab bazaar early morning (~200-300 TJS to Osh; ~150 TJS to Sary Tash). Arrange pickup from homestay evening before.

  • Tajik exit — Quick passport check (10-20 min).
  • No-man’s-land (~20km) — Epic views; self-drive/cycle fine.
  • Kyrgyz entry — Simple stamp at window.

Continue to Sary Tash (cafe stop, money exchange) then Osh (~3-4 hours).

From Kyrgyzstan → Tajikistan (Osh → Murghab)

Shared taxis leave Osh early (3-5am, ~2,000 KGS to Murghab). Reverse process; change vehicles if needed (locals restricted).

Tips

  • Altitude: 4,280m—acclimatize (Murghab/Karakul helpful). Possible snow year-round.
  • Transport: Shared taxis common; private ~$150-200/car. Cyclists/motorists welcome.
  • Bribes: Rare but possible—politely decline.
  • Season: Open summer; check winter snow.

Where to Stay

Murghab: Tulfabek or Erali Homestay (budget, meals included).
Osh: Sunny Hostel (budget) or Silk Way Boutique (midrange).

This remains one of the world’s most scenic crossings—enjoy the Pamirs! Check Caravanistan forums for last-minute updates.
