OVIR Registration in Tajikistan: Dushanbe Guide

Updated September 2026OVIR Registration in Tajikistan: Dushanbe Guide was originally published in December 2024

If you’re traveling to Tajikistan visa-free and plan to stay in country for more than 10 business days, you may need to complete OVIR registration with the Department of Visas and Registration of Foreign Citizens.

For most travelers staying in Dushanbe, this means visiting the OVIR office at 5 Mirzo Tursunzoda Street to register your stay. Registration needs to be completed within 10 business days of arrival.

I’ve gone through the OVIR registration process in Dushanbe myself (as well as in Khorog and Murghab), and while it sounds more intimidating than it actually is, there are a few things you should know before showing up at the office.

This guide covers where to register with OVIR in Dushanbe, what documents you need, the registration process, how long it takes, how much it costs, and what to expect when you arrive.

Planning to register with OVIR in Khorog? Check out my post on registering with OVIR in Khorog to find out all the requirements, as they do differ from those at the Dushanbe office.

Important: If you’re entering Tajikistan on an e-Visa, you do not need to register with OVIR after arrival.

Where Is the OVIR Office in Dushanbe?

The OVIR office in Dushanbe is located at:

5 Mirzo Tursunzoda Street in Dushanbe

This is the office you need for OVIR registration in Dushanbe.

If you’re staying somewhere in central Dushanbe, the office is straightforward to reach by taxi. I’d recommend using the address above rather than simply searching “OVIR” in a maps app, since government offices in Tajikistan aren’t always the easiest places to navigate by name.

What Do You Need for OVIR Registration in Dushanbe?

Before heading to the OVIR office, make sure you have:

  • Your passport
  • A registration letter from your accommodation
  • Money to pay the registration fee

Before going to OVIR, ask your hotel or hostel to prepare the registration letter for you as they will ask for it at the OVIR office. Dushanbe accommodations are familiar with providing the required letter.

OVIR Dushanbe Office Hours

The OVIR office in Dushanbe is currently open:

Monday-Friday: 08:00-17:00

I recommend going as early as possible rather than turning up near closing time. Processing times can vary, and you’ll want some flexibility if the office asks for additional paperwork.

Do note that OVIR office does close for local holidays, so keep that in mind when you go over to the office.

How to Register with OVIR in Dushanbe

The OVIR registration process in Dushanbe is fairly straightforward once you know where to go.

1. Go to the OVIR office

Head to 5 Mirzo Tursunzoda Street during office hours.

2. Go to the OVIR registration window

Enter the building and walk toward the window on the back wall. Tell the staff that you need OVIR registration.

If you’re also planning to travel to the GBAO/Pamir region and need a GBAO permit, mention that at the same time.

3. Submit your documents

You’ll need to show your passport and the registration documentation from your accommodation.

I’d recommend having photocopies ready if possible, although requirements can change.

4. Pay the registration fee

You’ll then be told how much you need to pay. The amount can vary depending on the processing time and current fees.

5. Collect your registration

The officer will tell you when to return to collect your registration documentation.

My experience: I visit Dushanbe OVIR pretty often and a couple of the officers do speak some English and are helpful, which makes the process considerably less intimidating.

How Long Does OVIR Registration in Dushanbe Take?

The processing time for OVIR registration in Dushanbe can vary.

In my experience, I usually arrive between 08:00 and 09:00 and am told my registration will be ready between 16:00 and 17:00, so same-day processing is usually possible. At slower times, I have walked in and walked out with my OVIR registration complete in five minutes.

However, don’t plan your itinerary around getting your registration back the same day. It can take a couple of days.

My advice: Go as early in the day as possible and leave yourself some flexibility in your Dushanbe itinerary.

How Much Does OVIR Registration in Dushanbe Cost?

OVIR Registration Tajikistan, Adventures of Nicole

The cost of OVIR registration in Dushanbe varies, so be aware when budgeting for your trip.

When I completed the process last in March 2026, I paid 170 TJS for same-day processing. Though prices can range from 150-250 TJS, depending on the processing speed and circumstances.

Fees can change, and the amount you’re quoted at the OVIR office may depend on how quickly you need the registration processed.

Can I Get a GBAO Permit at OVIR in Dushanbe?

OVIR is also where you will need to purchase your GBAO permit if you plan to go to the GBAO (Pamir). In my experience, the GBAO permit costs 100 TJS if you want to get it the same day or 50 TJS if you can wait until the following day to pick it up. This price can also vary depending on who you’re dealing with and the mood of the officer on duty.

What Happens If You Don’t Register With OVIR?

DO NOT skip OVIR registration if you’re required to complete it.

Failure to register can cause problems when leaving Tajikistan. Travelers who fail to register can face fines or delays in departure if they fail to register or lose their registration documentation. I have heard the fines can amount up to $500 USD.

If you’re unsure whether you need to register, it’s much better to clarify the requirement before your permitted registration period expires.

Will My Hotel Register Me for OVIR?

Most hotels or hostels won’t complete your OVIR registration for you as of 2026. Current guidance says travelers who need registration should register with OVIR themselves, although your accommodation should be able to provide the documentation you need for the process.

Before going to OVIR, ask your hotel or hostel for the registration lette required for OVIR. This can save you a wasted trip.

Do You Need OVIR Registration With a Tajikistan e-Visa?

No. If you enter Tajikistan with the e-visa, you do not need to complete OVIR registration after arrival. Current U.S. government travel guidance specifically confirms that e-Visa holders are exempt from the registration requirement.

If you’re eligible for a Tajikistan e-Visa and your itinerary fits the e-Visa rules, this can be a much simpler option than entering visa-free and dealing with OVIR registration in Dushanbe.
